Designs :: Cyclocross

To support one of cycling's fastest growing sports we've drawn on our decades of experience building road and off-road competition bikes as well as our work with national and international class riders.

  • Responsive handling - ideal for today's mixed road/trail courses.
  • Long top tube geometry to keep your weight well balanced.
  • Plenty of ground and tire (700 x 38C) clearance.
  • Support for classic, functional cantilever brakes.

Gestalt Design does it again - enhancing every aspect of the rider's experience - design to completely serve the rider.

Tubing:

>Waterford 22 Series bicycles uphold the values of low-temp silver-brazed lugged construction. Handcrafted of Reynolds 853 and True Temper OX Platinum. Made-to-measure, braze-ons and full color selection at no additional cost.

>The Waterford 14 Series bicycles are expertly TIG welded of tough Reynolds 853 and True Temper OX Platinum lightweight air-hardening steels. (This new series replaces previous 11 Series bicycles.)

  • Special oversized diameter tubing throughout the frame increases tubing stiffness while reducing weight. Flaring the seatmast at the bottom bracket adds stiffness where it has the maximum impact on pedaling efficiency.
  • Oversized (24mm), full round chainstays provide extra stiffness where it has the most impact on pedaling efficiency. Yet the X-series provides tire clearance for 38C tires and chainwheel clearance for triples.
  • Waterford's unique short-butt design eliminates any unnecessary weight while assuring strength near the lugs - precisely where it is needed.

Geometries

Our Cyclocross Geometry Tables show the care we've put into these designs:

  • Our front-end geometry balances the maneuverability needed in cyclocross competition with the need for extra off-road stability over road racing geometries.
  • By varying the seat angle with size we maintain proper weight distribution over a wide range of sizes.
  • We raise the bottom bracket position from our road bike location to let you clear more obstacles.
  • The top tube relatively sits low to provide easy mounting and dismounting while providing sound weight distribution.
  • We spread the rear dropouts to 130mm to fit the most up-to-date high-performance component groups.
  • The longer chainstays add ride comfort, accommodate larger tires (as high as some 38C tires or 35C with fenders), provide mud clearance and even allow for generous rear pannier clearance.

Forks

You can order a number of quality forks for your road sport extended. We take pains to match precisely your frame with your fork to assure the best possible ride:

Waterford's Steel Fork

No builder creates a steel fork with the ride of a Waterford fork. The combination of stiff crown and soft blade tips combines to offer what many riders characterize as the best ride you can buy!

  • The Waterford cross investment cast fork crown minimizes weight while offering exceptionally responsive steering and excellent tire clearance. Our in-house fork-building capability lets us offer handling packages that fall outside the range of the available composite forks.
  • Waterford 1" forks are available as both threaded and threadless configurations at no extra charge. The 1 1/8" fork is only available in threadless.
  • Custom-engineered Reynolds 531 constant wall thickness fork blades as well as our special fork rake offer excellent shock damping.
  • The 22-series fork receives Waterford stainless steel dropouts. Your dropout faces stay clean - no rust or peeling of the finish.

Composite forks

Waterford offers the following composite fork option with the X-series.

  • True Temper Alpha Q cross fork with TI steerer tube

X-22

  • Our advanced lower head lugs incorporate threaded derailleur cable guides which, with our spring loaded barrel adjusters offers riders the first truly STI, Ergo and bar-end system compatible frameset in the world! Riders can make derailleur adjustments on the fly. Downtube shifter bosses are available.
  • Our proprietary brake cable guides incorporated into the lugs eliminate weight by allowing shorter butts. They also eliminate a second heating of the tube, maximizing tube strength and integrity.
  • Maintain high strength while eliminating corrosion and paint abrasion from quick release levers. Regardless of the model, we maintain such tight alignment standards that no dropout adjusters are required on the frame.
  • The Model X-22 may be ordered with optional stainless steel investment cast head lugs and fork crown. This gives you the look of chrome without sacrificing the performance of today's fine materials and design. The matching stainless fork crown is available but may not offer the same range of tire sizes.
  • Riders looking for a more upright position might benefit from our head tube extensions. Press here for an example of a 20mm extension.
  • Press here to see our clean seat cluster and fastback stay design.
  • Don't forget about our remarkable bottom bracket.
  • Available for 1" steerers - threaded and threadless.
  • Framesets typically come with cantilever bosses, rear brake cable hanger, rear eyelets, rack mounts and two sets of water bottle braze-ons.

X-14

  • Available for both 1" and 1 1/8" steerer tubes.
  • Versatile downtube shifter bosses are available.
  • Our brazed-on seat collar provides a finished look and secure clamping power.
  • Our stainless steel vertical dropouts have a clean look while holding the rear wheel firmly in place.
  • Framesets typically come with rear eyelets, rack mounts and two sets of water bottle braze-ons.
